Through the Eyes of an Artist/Photographer

Michelle Samotny, Director of the Ela Fine Arts Show 2005, recently spoke with Bill Hottinger, Best of Show Winner in 2004 & 2005, regarding his approach to Artistic Photography. As in years past, it is tradition for the Ela Fine Arts Show to use a photograph of the previous year’s Best of Show Winner in the promotion of the Ela Fine Arts Show and support of the artist. This year we were pleased to include “Lake Powell” courtesy of Bill Hottinger on our show postcard, said Michelle Samotny-Shepherd, Show Director, who had the unique opportunity to speak with Mr. Hottinger and receive the artist’s perspective through his view, his eyes and his methodology.

Bill Hottinger, Artist/Photographer, explained: Artistically, his intention is to capture a spiritual emanation from or essence embodied within his subjects, whether human, animal, plant, landform, or artifact. He seeks the magic and beauty through his photography as an antidote to a culture he often perceives as toxic and delusional.

Mr. Hottinger further stated that he most often uses available light, his images are more discoveries than constructions; his compositions more found than arranged and he seldom uses a tripod. His process is fluid and his style photojournalistic.

When asked what has and continues to inspired him as a photographer, he replied “I am inspired by the intricate and awesome beauty found in Nature, from the vascular system of the lotus leaf to the exotic geology of the American Southwest. I dig the Midwest rural landscape for its often harmonious interplay between Nature and the hand of man.” “Lake Powell” by Bill Hottinger is a reflection of the artistic style of the artist/ photographer.

Cultural Arts Connection congratulates Mr. Hottinger on his award and recognizes his excellence in photography as the 2005 Ela Fine Arts Show – Best of Show Winner.
